SERPreach snapshot: Google AI Overviews cite YouTube and Reddit while vendor sites often go uncited

“AI Overview citations across 12 US commercial searches: YouTube 7 of 12, Zapier 4, Reddit 4, G2 2. None belongs to the brands being searched. Source: SERPreach.”
A 12-query SERPreach snapshot of US commercial searches found YouTube cited in seven of 12 AI Overviews. A companion capture of “best project management software” found no vendor site cited at all. New guide covers AI Overview optimization.

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, September 10, 2026 — Google AI Overviews on commercial search queries frequently bypass vendors’ own websites to cite YouTube, Reddit, and third-party listicles, according to a data snapshot and review of published research released today by SERPreach. The findings are detailed in a new evidence-led guide, AI Overview Optimization: The Platforms That Actually Get Cited, examining source links on buying-intent searches.

Key Findings

  • In a 12-query snapshot of US commercial searches, all 12 generated an AI Overview with source links, producing 85 unique cited URLs. YouTube appeared in seven of the 12 queries, earning 18 citations overall, more than any other single domain. [SERPreach]

  • In a companion capture taken on the same basis, the AI Overview for “best project management software” cited exactly three sources: a Reddit thread, a Zapier listicle, and a G2 category page. No vendor’s own website was cited. [SERPreach]

  • For comparison queries, Google often cited a competing vendor’s alternative page. Salesforce pages were cited for “hubspot alternatives,” and Constant Contact for “mailchimp alternatives.” [SERPreach]

  • In a separate B2B software sample, 63.4% of 1,259 citations went to third-party “best of” blogs compared with 16.8% for vendor sites, and 71.9% of 445 product recommendations named a vendor whose own site was not cited. [DerivateX]

  • Across 22,729 commercial AI Overviews, 34.5% cited a review platform. Gartner Peer Insights, G2, Capterra, Software Advice and TrustRadius captured 88% of those links. Review-phrased queries pulled a review platform into 49% of AI Overviews, against 17.1% for “best” and “top” queries. [SE Ranking]

Video and user-generated content

SERPreach pulled the data on August 22, 2026, using Ahrefs SERP data across 12 commercial queries. Zapier and Reddit were each cited in four of the 12 sampled queries, while G2 was cited in two. The presence of multimedia and user-generated content was most visible on review-focused searches: on “clickup reviews,” four of the 12 cited sources were YouTube videos.

On alternatives queries, the snapshot found Google frequently citing a competing brand’s comparison page rather than the vendor’s own. Identifying those patterns is part of competitor backlink analysis for companies auditing their visibility.

The role of aggregators

For “best seo agency,” the AI Overview cited the Clutch and GoodFirms directories alongside agency blogs. That shifts attention toward off-page SEO and how brands appear on aggregator lists. The data shows where citations concentrate. It does not show that appearing on a cited page causes Google to recommend a brand, and it guarantees no ranking or citation outcome. Earned coverage through digital PR is one route brands use to reach those third-party pages.

The guide ranks twelve platform types by the citation evidence behind each, maps query wording to the platforms it tends to pull in, sets out how to get onto each platform, and closes with a 90-day baseline-and-measurement sequence.

Quote

“The snapshot shows that on commercial queries, Google leans heavily on established aggregators, user forums and video platforms for its source links,” said Sabahat Ali, founder of SERPreach. “For brands, that means being part of the conversation on YouTube, Reddit and industry review sites is a practical way to approach AI Overviews. It is less about forcing a vendor page into the citations and more about making sure the brand is covered by the third-party platforms already being cited.”

Methodology

The snapshot recorded one US capture per query, pulled on August 22, 2026, from Ahrefs SERP data, with captures dated between July 30 and August 21, 2026. The “best project management software” observation was a companion capture taken the same way on the same date, separate from the 12-query sample. The 12 sampled queries were: best crm for small business, best email marketing software, best accounting software for small business, best seo tools, hubspot alternatives, mailchimp alternatives, monday.com reviews, clickup reviews, best payroll software, best vpn, best running shoes, best seo agency. It is a point-in-time snapshot of citation distribution, not a study, survey or benchmark.
